Daniel
Lee Brooks
Born: 31 January 2002 Died: 31 July 2002 Daniel
appeared to be a happy, healthy newborn but began to have trouble breathing
and eating shortly after birth. Daniel was transported from the Army hospital
where he was born to a local hospital with more facilities to treat infants.
It was there he was found to have Hypo-Plastic
Left Heart Syndrome. Daniel would need to be transferred to a hospital
in Dallas to undergo the first of a three-stage procedure to improve the
function of his heart. Daniel and his parents, Kateena and Mitchell spent
3 weeks in Dallas Childrens
Hospital where Daniel quickly recovered from his first and most difficult
operation. Daniel and Family returned to El Paso, TX to get started with
his life. Daniel's family enjoyed his company for approximately three
weeks until he became critically ill and had to return to Children's
Medical Center of Dallas. Daniel and at least one parent remained
in Dallas until he was determined to be well enough to return to a hospital
in El Paso where treatment continued. Daniel did well for the next couple
of months but struggled to overcome numerous infections and was finally
returned to Children's
Medical Center of Dallas at the end of May for more intensive treatment
and to prepare him for his second surgery. After Daniel gained adequate
weight and overcame his infections he underwent his second surgery. The
surgery went well but Daniel had a difficult time recovering from the
surgery. Every time Daniel seemed to be getting better he began to have
trouble breathing and had to be put back on the ventilator. After numerous
tests his doctors determined that his Tricuspid heart valve had been too
badly damaged by infection for him to ever live without the ventilator.
After much thought and prayer Daniel was taken off the ventilator and
passed away with his mother, father, brother Mickey and Grandma with him. |
